Artist's Comments

This photo was taken on February 8th, 2007. Finally.. finally patience pays off. I've been waiting to get a descent close up of a male cardinal for so long. You know how hard that is?? They do not sit still at all, and since they stand out with their colors, they scare very easily. This was one day I decided to just have my whole gear set up, instead of having to army crawl back and fourth to get set up. I was angled with the window so when it came it couldn't see me and the sun allowed for it's colors to just shine. There's only one thing... and that's of course, the colorless sparrow feeding in back.. thus the title. Nothing against what my grandfather called "sputzies", but they sure do look dull in comparison.

P.S. Pardon the little bit of birdseed on his beak. I decided to leave that in there. Birds are messy eaters.

How sharp! Where did you ever find a 500mm lens?

Thank you so much. I thought the title made sense. Thanks for faving. :highfive:

It belonged to my father and he since has lost interest in photography. Very sad I know, but it's great to be able to utilize his lenses and gear. That's why I went Canon instead of Nikon. Thank you for commenting.

Big thanks for faving and for your comments. I was just fooling around- shooting squirrels because they hog the seed and to my amazement a pair dropped by. It was great.

Ah, been trying for a cardinal shot myself. We hung a birdseed bell outside our window today and every time our cardinal would get close to it, the blue jays would swoop down for a peck...damn them. This is a lovely shot despite the sparrow. I think there are few birds that actually rate as ugly anyway. Great capture.

Thank you and I agree. There isn't a "Bluejay Way" going on in my backyard. You know, I've always have wanted a close-up of one, but I only put out thistle and sunflower seed instead of all the norm. That might help you if you've got them bad. Thanks again for faving and your comment.

Actually my hubby is the birder and we have got three suet holders and three bird feeders on the pole outside my kitchen window and a suet feeder and a bell outside my living room window. I guess I'll just have to hope for a lucky break....and those are harder to come by than the cardinal!
